Diese Zeit, so gesteht er im Gespräch mit dem 'Stern', habe auf sein Leben eine wichtige Auswirkung gehabt. "Das Boxen war gut für mich. Da gab es kein grau, nur schwarz oder weiß. Es hat mir die Balance im Leben gegeben, die mir fehlte. Im Ring gibt es keine Lügen." Für seinen Entschluss, in den Ring zu steigen, musste der Star viel Kritik einsteigen. "Alle dachten sie, ich sei destruktiv, würde zugrunde gehen", erinnert er sich. "Aber durch das Boxen habe ich gelernt, was es heißt, sich konzentrieren zu müssen. Ich bin heute wesentlich konzentrierter als ich es früher war."

Bevor er seine Sportler-Karriere verfolgte, blieben bei dem Star aus '9 1/2 Wochen' die Rollenangebote aus. "Ich war zwölf Jahre ohne Arbeit. Zwölf verdammte Jahre saß ich neben dem Telefon. Und es hat nicht geklingelt", erinnert er sich. Durch den Film-Noir 'Sin City' gelang dem heute 59-Jährigen im Jahr 2000 schließlich das Comeback. "Ich hatte viel Zeit, in mich zu gehen, nachzudenken. Ich musste mich ändern, das war irgendwann auch mir klar", sagt er über seine Jahre ohne Rollenangebote.

Obwohl es für Rourke lange schlecht lief, macht er nur sich selbst für seine Fehler verantwortlich. "Ich musste in den Spiegel schauen und realisieren, dass ich es war, der Bockmist gebaut hatte. Ich war ein Star in den 80er Jahren, und ich war fertig in den 90ern. Da lernst du schon ein bisschen Ehrfurcht." Nachdem er sich geändert habe, seien jedoch einige Eigenschaften zurückgeblieben, gesteht er. "Ich war böse vor 20 Jahren, einfach nur böse mit der Welt. Heute bin ich das nicht mehr. Aber ich habe immer noch ein bisschen Probleme mit Autorität. Das wird sich wohl niemals ändern."
